Sustainability

Baros has been our home for more than 50 years. We look after it accordingly.

Long before Baros welcomed its first guests, it was a wild island of coconut palms and undergrowth, ringed by reef.

We've spent more than five decades protecting what makes it special, above and below the water. For us, sustainability is simply how we run the island, and we invite you to be part of it while you're here.

For 20 years, our marine biologists have been helping broken coral grow back. You can sponsor a frame of your own and watch it grow long after you've gone home.

Our dive centre was among the first in the Maldives to be certified as an eco dive centre. Every dive is planned to leave the reef exactly as we found it.

Learn how to give back

Snorkel with a marine biologist, join a talk on reef life or take a guided walk across the island. Our Marine Centre is the place to start.

Looking after the island

Much of our work happens out of sight. Water is recycled and purified before it irrigates the gardens, and a heat-exchange system warms the water for your shower.

Lighting across the island is LED, the air conditioning is CFC-free and every cleaning product we use is biodegradable.

Beyond Baros, our team runs environmental awareness programmes in neighbouring island communities.

A few simple ways to protect the reef

Our Underwater Ambassadors, drawn from the Divers Baros Maldives team, share a few habits that make a real difference.

Move slowly and keep your buoyancy steady.

Look closely, but avoid touching or chasing marine life.

Please leave coral and shells where you find them, and avoid buying anything made from turtle shell – taking any of these out of the Maldives isn't allowed.

Follow these simple rules and you'll help keep the house reef as full of life for the next guests as it was for you.

Have a question about the reef? Ask any of our Underwater Ambassadors at the dive centre or Marine Centre.

Plant a piece of the reef

When coral breaks, it can still survive if it's given somewhere stable to grow.

Since 2006, our marine biologists have been gathering living fragments from the seabed and attaching them to coral tables made here on the island, creating nurseries that become homes for reef fish and invertebrates over time.

You can take part. Our resident marine biologist will show you how to attach fragments to your own frame, which carries a personalised name tag. For two years afterwards, we'll send you an update every six months so you can follow its progress from home. If you'd rather stay dry, you can still sponsor a frame and our team will plant it for you.

To sponsor a coral, visit the Marine Centre during your stay or ask your Baros butler to arrange it.

Diving that leaves the reef as it was

In December 2010, our dive centre became one of the first in the Maldives to be certified as an eco dive centre.

Every dive starts with a buoyancy and weight check, so fins and tanks stay clear of the coral.

Wherever the current allows, we drift dive rather than drop anchor, sparing the seabed. Our team also contributes to Reef Check, the IUCN Maldives manta ray identification project and the Shark Watch project, and offers Project AWARE specialty courses if you'd like to learn more about reef ecology while you dive.

To book a dive or a Project AWARE course, drop into the dive centre or ask your Baros butler.

Meet the people who know the reef best

Our Underwater Ambassadors are the divers, biologists and instructors who spend their days on and under the water around Baros, and each has a part of the reef they care about most.

Ambra, our Base Leader, Dive Instructor and Marine Biologist, has led our coral restoration work since 2006.

Charlotte, Marine Biologist, champions protecting young fish so they can grow and breed.

Dive Master Ahmed knows the manta rays that live in North Malé Atoll all year round, while Assistant Base Leader Ali can find a leaf fish or frogfish hiding in plain sight.

Dive Instructors Rachel and Abdul explain why Baros is one of the very few resorts that chooses not to feed stingrays.

Usaan, Water Sports Instructor and Hassan, will tell you all about the plankton that makes the water glow at night, and Giyas keeps watch over the house reef sharks, including Finny, our resident blacktip.

Discover the reef through the eyes of a biologist

Our Marine Centre is open every day from 9 am to 6 pm. Drop in to be fitted for snorkelling gear, book an excursion or talk to our marine biologists about what you've seen.

Every snorkelling trip is led by a biologist, and groups are kept small. Twice a week, there's a free 60-minute talk on the reef, from coral biology to the animals you're most likely to meet, with plenty of time for questions, and a free guided nature walk across the island.

Our popular Fully Ocean week marks World Oceans Day with coral planting, night snorkelling and marine identification sessions.

Drop in any day between 9 am and 6 pm, and ask the team for this week's talk and walk times.
