How to Stay Connected in the Maldives: Communication Tips

30 November 2023 |

Holidaying in the Maldives is blissfully restful. Surrounded by the beauty of sun, sand and sea, the pressures of life fade away as the waves lap onto the powder-white shore. As much as you want to disconnect and recharge in paradise, you don’t want to be completely stranded and cut off.

A stay at Baros might feel like you are a million miles away, but you can still connect with the world when you need to.

Internet

Baros has fast, complimentary wireless internet available across the island, in public areas as well as in all our villas. You can easily send emails, video call family or upload holiday photos to social media.

If you are heading off-island to explore, then it’s a good idea to purchase a local SIM card so that you can stay connected. In the Maldives, our two main service providers are Dhiraagu and Ooredo, both of which offer good coverage across the islands and have sales offices in Velana International Airport. You will be able to talk to representatives and compare data and call plans to find one that works for you best.

Check with your provider that your phone is unlocked before leaving home. You can then purchase a local SIM card and will be able to use that to make calls and access the internet when not in range of Baros’s Wi-Fi.

Telephone

All of our villas have telephones for calls. To make international calls just dial 00 followed by the desired country code. Lengthy calls using a landline can add up, that’s why popular applications such as Skype, WhatsApp and Viber are a great option, allowing you to use the fast Wi-Fi to make web-based international calls for free.

Post

Although sending letters is an outmoded form of communication, sending a postcard when you are on vacation is still a wonderfully tangible way of connecting with loved ones. Browse from a collection of beautiful postcards in our island boutique store to choose snapshots of paradise that you can post home to family and colleagues.

If you want to get off the digital grid, postcards are a way of connecting with those back home that does not require going onto a device. It also lets those that you love know you are thinking of them.

Posting your card is easy at Baros. After writing your postcard, give it to your dedicated butler, and they will arrange for stamps and for it to be posted.

Courier services

If you need important documents couriered while you are on holiday, DHL and FedEx operate in the capital city of Malé, and your butler would be happy to arrange this for you.

As connected as you need to be

At Baros, you can choose to unplug completely and store your phone at the bottom of your empty suitcase. However, should you wish to chat with loved ones, or engage in important business, we are connected and ready to help.
