Since 2006, Baros has been engaged in coral restoration and planting. Several natural happenings increased the urgency to propagate corals. Rising water temperatures lead to increased stress on the corals, causing bleaching and eventually death. Although natural events, these are often the result of, or aggravated by, our human footprint.

In a country where fish and other marine animals are the main source of food, the problem of catching undersized fish is common. This affects the life cycle of fish and ultimately their population growth, an effect of the human footprint that could be easily controlled and avoided.

MARIE - Dive Instructor
For several years the practice of feeding sting rays, to attract tourists, has been common and popular in many establishments around the Maldives. Despite the prohibition of the practice by law, it still continues. Baros is one of the very few resorts where we refuse to do so due to the risk to both wildlife and guests.

At the very bottom of the marine life cycle are phytoplanktons. Although invisible to the naked eye, these tiny single-cell microalgae and bacteria are responsible for the enchanting phenomenon of bioluminescence and are the foundation of the food chain for our vibrant and diverse marine ecosystem.
