It gently slopes to a depth of 20m and is home to spectacular coral, harmless blacktip sharks, turtles, rays and many other species.

The house reef is a nursery ground for blacktip sharks, which can be seen daily. It is also home to nurse sharks, rays, batfish, groupers, tuna and schools of fusilier surgeonfish.

After you have spent time exploring our world-class house reef, you can easily explore nearby reefs, located a short trip by boat from Baros. Our traditional dhoni, Nooma, is the perfect vessel to take you on this adventure. Sail billowing in the breeze, wooden prow pointed towards the horizon, she is built for adventure. Night snorkelling
Once the amber orb of the sun has sunk beneath the horizon, you can plunge into a neon-coloured world of corals. Night snorkelling allows you to experience the wonders of the Baros house reef as it comes alive with fluorescence. Equipped with blue lights and a yellow filter on your mask, witness the phenomenon as certain marine life absorbs part of the blue light and emits a different colour. This spellbinding effect is called fluorescence and reveals unusual yellows, greens, pinks and blues giving you a spectacular experience.

Coral sponsorship
Give back to the beauty of the Baros house reef by supporting our Coral Reef Regeneration Programme and sponsoring a coral frame. Our resident Marine Biologist will teach you about the coral propagation methods we invest in for the benefit of our island and its reef. You will be given the opportunity to participate in this by collecting broken, but still living, coral fragments from the seabed and attaching them to coral tables.
