5 Essential Underwater Experiences in Maldives

30 July 2022 | All Blogs, Destination, Experience

Whilst staying at Baros Maldives you are exposed to an underwater world of incredible marine life within a short swim from your villa. Dive into the turquoise blue lagoon and discover a marine world of bewitching beauty, with colourful fish and turtles drifting through the Baros house reef. Or choose to dive at one or more of the 30 world-class dive sites less than an hour away from Baros.

1. Go diving at Nasimo Thila
Nasimo Thila is a 45-minute boat ride away from Baros and offers experienced divers one of the most spectacular dive sites in the Maldives. A section of the reef has broken off, leaving huge coral boulders at 18- 30m down, covered with a blanket of soft and hard corals. Where the reef has broken off, a long series of overhangs and crevices remain for exploration. The ceilings of these overhangs are covered with a beautiful layer of blue soft corals. The dive site is home to a profusion of trevally, turtles, reef shark, tuna, schools of snapper and fusilier and beautiful violet soldierfish.

2. Snorkel With A Marine Biologist
Join in on our coral restoration activities and accompany the resident Marine Biologist on a house reef tour. Plant a coral cube and learn more about restoring seagrass beds and protecting reef residents such as turtles, blacktip sharks, rays and an abundance of other tropical fish.

3. Dive Baari Thila
Baari Thila is exclusively for Baros divers. It’s a perfect dive spot to take underwater photographs. Catch sharks and rays sleeping in the sand, barracudas and eagle rays in the deeper waters and large schools of oriental sweetlips.

4. Manta Ray Exploration
Baros is one of a few rare places in the world where you can dive with manta rays all year round, although June to November is the best time to swim with these gentle giants. You’ll be captivated by their synchronised and what appears to be choreographed routines as they come within centimetres of you, and then suddenly somersault away. You will know you are in the presence of something extraordinary.

5. Fluo Night Diving
Equipped with special diving lights and mask filters, Baros guests can discover a whole new underwater world with “Fluo” snorkelling or diving sessions at night. Check out creatures whilst they are sleeping and find nocturnal predators that are awake and hunting. “Fluo” lights generate the maximum amount of bio-fluorescence, known as blue light. Certain marine life absorbs part of the blue light and emits a different colour. This effect is called fluorescence and reveals unusual yellows, greens, pinks and blues. You will see shining neon-coloured corals, bright green Anemone and lemon-yellow juvenile moray eels.
